Kings Mountain National Military Park

On October 7, 1780, an event occurred that would forever change history; the Battle of Kings Mountain.  Most of the minor battles of the Revolutionary War occurred in this general area, but the one hour event that that marked the turning point of the Revolutionary War occurred on the grounds of what is known as Kings Mountain National Military Park.

When you first arrive at Kings Mountain National Military Park, you will find a Visitor Center which exhibits a film describing the battle and why it happened, how it happened, who it happened to, and how it changed the course of the Revolutionary War.

There are several events that occur at the Battleground.  One of the major ones is celebrated every October 7, the day the Battle occurred, and a wreath laying ceremony takes place at the US monument located on the grounds.  There are also several other events throughout the year that honor the service men.

For those who enjoy being outside and exploring nature, Kings Mountain National Military Park offers a variety of walking and hiking trails ranging anywhere from 1.5 miles to 16 miles.  For those who enjoy riding horses, there are 16 miles of horse trails that twist through the Park. There is also a campground located at the Park, beside Garner Creek.  It is a 3 mile hike to this location, but this provides real, outdoor camping vibes and a beautiful view.  During the different seasons, a variety of birds can be spotted throughout the park.  Certain Trails lead to higher elevations where hawks and vultures can be spotted, while other trails lead down to the creek and other various water sources where waterfowl can be spotted.

Kings Mountain National Military Park is a place where one can become educated about past occurrences in history, all while being amazed by the scenic views and relaxation of nature.  It is a place one can go to escape reality and spend time alone or with others in the natural environment one of the most important wars in history.
